Our first hike.  Well OK … admittedly we took a bus to the park entrance (!), but it was still a good couple of miles (and many stairs) to the top;  and then we trekked all the back to Waikiki, with a restorative lunch stop at a hole-in-the-wall Japanese-Hawaiian restaurant (called, slightly bizzarely, the Pioneer Saloon …).  All in all a most satisfactory start.

The one slight fly in the ointment is that it’s still spring break week for US schools … so the place is thronged;  and (as you can see above & below) just about every tourist in Honolulu felt like joining us on Diamond Head, whose tunnels & stairs – betraying their 2nd World War origins – weren’t really made for these volumes …
