Bah Humbug. Yes … it’s that time of year already. Above: the decorations in Marshall Field’s. Marshall Field’s has now been taken over by Macy’s … but this flagship branch was – I believe – the world’s first-ever Department Store; and still without a doubt one of the most fabulous).
A good thing about this time of year (one of many): I’m out singing tonight. I’m part of a part-time male voice choir (called the Dredge … don’t ask …) that forms up in the run-up to every Christmas, and then does a series of carol concerts in hospitals etc over the festive season. Tonight’s one of our weekly rehearsals, and it’s great fun.
Annoying thing about this time of year: the Salvation Army stations an army of donation-collectors up both sides of Michigan Avenue. This wouldn’t be annoying in itself, except that they all have a little hand-bell that they ring constantly to attract attention. Even this wouldn’t be annoying in itself … if you were an occasional visitor to the Mag Mile. But if you walk up it 3 or 4 times a day, every day, between mid-November and Christmas … well … the occasional uncharitable thought does cross my mind. Does that make me a bad person?
Jingle Bells … Jingle Bells …
